Pipeline Theatre Company: What attracted you to Beardo? What made you want to work on this project?
Ben Langhorst: Funny story: I was the audition accompanist for Beardo (although I’m primarily an actor, I’ve got to pay my bills somehow). And then a friend saw the breakdown for Beardo on some casting website and said to me, “You should try and get seen for this.” So, I decided to take a leap and ask for an audition. And after reading through the script and listening to the score, I just thought, “I really want to be in this room and work on this really weird and cool piece of theater.” And, thankfully, it worked out!
PTC: Where do you see yourself in your character?
BL: Well, I play two characters, so, does that mean I have a split personality? The Person of the Court is a rather haughty member of the Russian elite, and I draw on the, um, let’s say more judgmental side of myself (which I think we all have lurking inside). And in the Murderer (who is one of Beardo’s murderers), he does whatever he’s told, which he just blindly believes is the right thing to do, which I can relate to (but I’ve never murdered anyone, I promise).
PTC: If you ruled the world, what would you be remembered for?
BL: I would be remembered for creating a national holiday in remembrance of Elaine Stritch. Just a lot of white button downs, black tights, and vodka stingers.
PTC: Tell us two truths and a lie.
BL: I once played L. Ron Hubbard in a youth theater “Christmas pageant” about the history Scientology; I openly wept in front of my driving test administrator when I failed my drivers license test; My first pet was a red fish who I named “Blue”
PTC: If you could create a tagline for the show, what would it be?
BL: History doesn’t always have it’s eyes on you. (I’ll see myself out for that joke. Sorry, everyone.)
