Serena Ebony Miller is an actress/cellist/vocalist/ bassist from Baltimore and Pittsburgh, who is joining the Beardo band as our cellist. Serena recently joined us in the band for our Matchstick Series: While We Slept, alongside Nate Weida and John Bennett. Serena is currently working on a cello score for a new play called La Bestia, by Tom Block and has performed at Ars Nova, The Cutting Room, The Bitter End, Heinz Hall, The Metropolitan Room, and many a church. Pipeline Theatre Company: What attracted you to Beardo? What made you want to work on this project?
Serena Ebony Miller: I love strings- any music that has stringed instruments in it, I will listen to, and I love seeing them represented in theater. So I was absolutely excited at the prospect of working on the Beardo score, and since I was already a fan of Pipeline, it seemed like the thing I was supposed to do!
PTC: Why do you perform the role you perform? Why cello?
SEM: Honestly, I was originally drawn to violin, which my mother killed, so… whilst checking out the viola, I saw the cello being demonstrated. I was just hooked, and have been since. There are so many reasons why (a few of them scientific) we are drawn to the sound of the cello…For me, music has been a constant throughout a life that often feels anything but, and the cello has been a large part of it. I also love acting, but I could never put this thing down.
PTC: If you ruled the world, what would you be remembered for?
SEM: I’d be remembered for loving my family, and having a LOT of books. Also, hopefully for being good at seeing situations from multiple sides.
PTC: Why should someone who has no connection to this show or its artists come see the show?
SEM: People should see the show to learn more about one of history’s most fascinating characters. I still remember learning about him in high school history class; his story is juicy and scandalous, and there’s a lot of mystery surrounding the man. Also, the score matched with the acoustics of the church promise a beautiful musical experience!
PTC: If you could create a tagline for this show, what would it be?
SEM: Sex, Strings… Monarchy? I have no idea. I’m terrible at these.
