The music for our upcoming world premiere musical, Folk Wandering, was composed collaboratively by nine emerging singer songwriters. In advance of our first performance on February 23, we’ll be sharing interviews with each of these composers, as well as with many of the key artists involved in the production. These conversations will bring you inside this show’s very unique process of creation, and bring you a bit closer to this brilliant and wild group of emerging artists. Today, we are pleased to bring you a spotlight on composer Barrie McLain.

Pipeline Theatre Company: How do you identify as an artist?
Barrie McLain: Performing artist and creator.
PTC: How did you come to work on Folk Wandering?
BM: Years ago, in the first workshops, I was a performer/creator.
PTC: What has been exciting to you about working with so many collaborators?
BM: Witnessing different songwriting processes is always a gift, and every new song and group is an adjustment. It’s an opportunity to be flexible and eager to discover together.
PTC: What has been different about this writing process, compared to others you’ve been a part of?
BM: It’s grown through so many collaborative configurations! Many folks have their eyes and ears on the work so it stays true to its core without being precious.
PTC: What aspect of the Folk Wandering story do you most relate to?
BM: The powerful women and the painful truths they must reckon with to overcome the obstacles they face in America.
