The workshop reading presentations of Nate Weida’s I’s Twinkle kick off this Sunday, so we took a moment to catch up with Nate and learn a little more about his epic opera and other upcoming Nate Weida projects.
Pipeline Theatre Company: What do you want us to know about your play?
Nate Weida: I’s Twinkle was written both as novel and a performance piece. What you will see in this development is my collaboration with Isaac Klein, and others, to translate the novel into a palatable performance.
PTC: When and where did you decide to start writing this play? Why?
NW: I’ve been thinking about I’s Twinkle and working on it for the last twelve years. I was inspired by a lot of different classic literary works I love, Dante’s Divine Comedy most particularly, and wanted to explore my own artistic journey through an homage to those forms.
PTC: What excites you most about this project?
NW: Writing is exciting, but nothing compares to the thrill of seeing and hearing these amazing artists bring it to life!
PTC: In one sentence, tell us something strange that happens in your play.
NW: A writer creates a character who creates a writer who creates a character.
PTC: Are you working on anything else?
NW: I’m working on moving and planning a wedding to my beautiful bride Alicen Hubert! Whoo! And crafting new hit tunes with my band Great Dog Almighty.
PTC: Two truths and a lie, go:
NW: I’s Twinkle is mostly autobiographical. I answered all these questions by myself. I once covered my naked friend in olive oil, in a platonic way.
PTC: What’s next for you?
NW: The children’s musical Jack and the Jelly Beanstalk, which I’m writing with Emil McGloin and another season with the foster care program at The Possibility Project.
