Pipeline Theatre Company: What attracted you to Beardo? What made you want to work on this project?
Brian Bock: Reading the material and listening to the music to Beardo made me laugh out loud repeatedly, which I take as a very good sign. I love how unexpected it feels; the music refuses prediction at any moment, and it’s challenging, which is exciting. And Yusapoof is fantastic.
PTC: Where do you see yourself in Yusapoof?
BB: Yusapoof is a noble in the court, who has very particular views about how it should be peopled and run. Those views tend toward extreme ends, alas. I see myself in his attention to detail, shall we say. And who wants to think about how one’s meat is made? It’s un-American.
PTC: If you ruled the world, what would you be remembered for?
BB: If I ruled the world, it would be incredibly, inconceivably, irrepressibly organized. It would eventually become oppressive and there would be a tight, nonviolent coup to overthrow me, but the damage would be done. My spotless, uncluttered legacy would persist.
PTC: Tell me two truths and a lie.
BB: Only six of my teeth are real. One of my pupils is bigger than the other. Sometimes my lungs tear and air escapes into my “pleural space”.
PTC: If you could create a tagline for this show, what would it be?
BB: Don’t get stuck in your hole.
