The music for our upcoming world premiere musical, Folk Wandering, was composed collaboratively by nine emerging singer songwriters. In advance of our first performance on February 23, we’ll be sharing interviews with each of these composers, as well as with many of the key artists involved in the production. These conversations will bring you inside this show’s very unique process of creation, and bring you a bit closer to this brilliant and wild group of emerging artists. Today, we are pleased to bring you a spotlight on composer Dominique Toney.

Pipeline Theatre Company: How do you identify as an artist?
Dominique Toney: I identify as an actor, singer, and songwriter.
PTC: How did you come to work on Folk Wandering?
DT: I was brought into Folk Wandering through Andrew Neisler. Andrew and I had been working in Political Subversities, a musical sketch comedy group, for about 2 years at this point. He as the associate director and myself as a performer and writer. Other Political Subversities members were also a part of the initial stages of the show, including Andrew Butler, Annie Tippe, and Kim Blanck.
PTC: What has been exciting to you about working with so many collaborators?
DT: About a month or two into the Folk Wandering writing process, I moved back home to Los Angeles to complete the recording of my debut album, so sadly I was not there for the full process. What I do fondly recall about those few weeks with the Folk Wandering crew, was how effortlessly the songs came to be. And how fun it was to have an hour to break into groups and share ideas and create something magical with one another. What was also so special about it was that we were all there on our own volition. Post college, spending our time to work on this piece of art together. That feels so rare to me. Usually people come on board to a project and ask “what’s in it for me?” and that wasn’t the case here. We were all just craving to be creative with one another, and to be of service to these wonderful words.
PTC: What big dreams have you been chasing recently?
DT: Well, I went to Los Angeles and never turned back. I’ve been here for 6 years now. I’ve released that album, worked on a few tv shows, and shot about 2 dozen commercials. I sing in a vocal trio and last year we started our own business (www.theeraqueens.com!)
PTC: What other projects do you have coming up?
DT: Recording new music! I wrote and recorded the theme song to an upcoming tv show. Oh, and you can catch me in the upcoming feature film “My Name Is Myeisha”, which will premiere at Slamdance later this month.
